About his works

  • “Theme and Variations, for Sameer” was originally composed for Oud, Sameer Makhoul’s instrument, and consists of an original theme and a set of two variations. Sameer Makhoul led a group of Arab and Jewish musicians during 2010-2012 in which I participated. We met twice a year in conferences in Jerusalem.
At the time I composed the work his father was seriously ill and our concern and empathy are in a way expressed in the music.
  • “Improvisations after Alex Wasserman” are based on a motive in Alex Wasserman’s “Last Songs” (to Lea Goldberg’s text) for voice and viola. A section of the score is deliberately left empty empty and calls for the performer to improvise that part.
